Mooney Falls
Mooney is a roaring thunderous falls that drops about 200 feet. Just past the campground is Mooney Falls. Be Careful! The ladder to the base of the falls is often slippery with mist from the powerfull spray of Mooney Falls.
It's name is attibuted to a 19th century miner who fell to his death here. Since then, two tunnels and steps have been carved and spikes driven into the rock to afford handholds - allowing a safer descent to the floor below.
Mooney Falls' pool was nearly filled with silt resulting from the flood of August 2008, and destroyed the travertine walls that held the pool in. Efforts are being made to assist nature's recovery and walls of sand bags are forming the base of new walls, the calcium carbonate is already being deposited and future travertine walls being formed.
